Planning a Visit to Sequoia National Forest?

Conditions in the forests change seasonally, during the winter months, many roads are closed due to snow. In late summer and fall, wildfires can necessitate closures in campground and day use areas. For detailed information on current restrictions and closures in this national forest, please visit the official USFS Sequoia National Forest website.

Sequoia National Forest Reopening

October 14 2020 — The Sequoia National Forest is opening additional recreational opportunities for the public originally closed due to the Sequoia (SQF) Complex fires.
Visitors may now access the Trail of 100 Giants. The roads are open from California Hot Springs to the intersection of Western Divide (M107) with Last Chance Road (Forest Road No. 22S02). From there, a visitor can travel down Last Chance Road to the Lloyd Meadow Road (Forest Road No. 22S82) then south to reach Johnsondale. Areas west to the forest boundary and north of this route are closed, while areas south are open.

Sequoia NF COVID-19 and Recreation Update – Temporary Closures in Effect

May 17, 2020 — The USDA Forest Service, Sequoia National Forest (SQF) announced that developed recreation sites will remain closed on the Western Divide Ranger District until May 21, the Hume Lake Ranger District until June 11, and the Kern River Ranger District until May 21.

Needles Rock Formation Temporarily Closed

PORTERVILLE, August 19, 2019 – The Needles rock formation, very popular with rock climbers, will be closed for a short duration while the charred staircase from the Needles Lookout is removed.

Winter Road Closures near Hume Lake

Winter snow play areas on the District include Quail Flat and Big Meadow winter trailheads, both accessed off the Generals Highway. Make a right turn past the Big Stump Entrance Station on Highway 180 to access these sites. Both trailheads provide safe parking, restrooms, and trash services.
